HUNGARIAN STATE OPERA

HUNGARIAN STATE OPERA

The Opera House opened to the public in the autumn of 1884 and it became the greatest ornament of Budapest’s new and imposing Sugár (today: Andrássy) Avenue. The majestic Neo-Renaissance-style building was designed by Miklós Ybl.  The fascinating splendour of the public spaces (auditorium, lounges, parlours), the dominating red and gold colours in the auditorium, the fine noble wood panelling and the special marble ashlar, and especially the murals which express the power and triumph of music, painted by the three masters of historicism, Károly Lotz, Bertalan Székely and Mór Than.

The Budapest Opera House soon became an important musical centre in Europe from the 1890s. The young Gustav Mahler led the company as artistic director for some years; Puccini came to Budapest on several occasions, and he personally oversaw his operas Madama Butterfly and La fanciulla del West. Richard Strauss also conducted his pieces here many times, and almost all of the world's renowned conductors, opera singers and ballet dancers have appeared on its stage.
